Jesus is enthroned at the right hand of the Father as He intercedes for us.
The coming of the Holy Spirit was the result of Jesus interceding.
Acts 2:33 'Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.'
On the Day of Pentecost Jesus said they would be baptised with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:5 'For John baptised with water but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.'
It is the first great event after the Ascension of Jesus. He prepared His disciples for that event.
Jesus prepared them by introducing the Holy Spirit in John 14:16
He called the Holy Spirit a "parakletos" which means another counsellor who comes alongside.
Playing the same role as Jesus, the Holy Spirit would be as real as Jesus. John 14:16-17
He will be a teacher and reminder of Jesus’ teaching John 14:26
He would convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgement John 16:8-11
He would guide into all truth John 16:13
He would make Jesus as real at a spiritual level as He had been when visible at the natural level John 16:17
The birth of the New Testament church: The Church existed before Pentecost Acts 7:38
Church/ekklesia = called out to be separated to God
Can one experience that event today? Is it at conversion or after?
Baptism / drenched, baptizo, plunge, immersed  in water.
They were immersed in the Spirit.
Pentecost:  Obedient, waiting in Jerusalem
Luke 24:49 'I am going to send you what my Father has promised but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.'
Acts 1:4 Jesus said, 'Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift my Father promised which you have heard me speak about.'
They were eyewitnesses of the resurrected Jesus.
500 saw Him alive 1 Corinthians 15:6
120 waited Acts 1:15
Where?  An upper room in Jerusalem Acts 1:13
- Maybe same room where Jesus celebrated the Passover and instituted the Breaking of Bread as a reminder of His death.
- All together in one place Acts 2:1
When?  50 days after Passover.
What happened?  'A violent wind filled the house while they sat. Tongues of fire separated and rested on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They spoke in tongues as the Spirit enabled them' Acts 2:1-4
Why did Pentecost take place?  Jesus interceded. It is what Jesus does, not what we do.
For what purpose?  To vindicate Christ Acts 2:36
It explained why He died. By God’s set purpose and foreknowledge Acts 2:23
That we may be forgiven of sins Acts 2:38
It explained where Jesus went after He rose from the dead Acts 2:33
Unconverted Jews responded Acts 2:12-13
Peter preached with power Acts 2:14ff*
3000 were changed and saved. The risen Jesus is very real to those baptised in the Holy Spirit.
Psalms 16:8 Peter quoted what David said about Him "I saw the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken" Acts 2:25
What was true of Peter was true of the rest...
Peter quoted Joel 2:28, Psalms 16:8, Psalms 110:1
What Jesus promised came true: The Holy Spirit was as real as Jesus.
They were freshly taught and reminded of Jesus teaching. More truth was revealed.
Jesus became so real they saw Him again John 16:16
Later those baptised in water had been convicted of sin, righteousness and judgement.
Tongues = languages unknown to the speakers but known to listeners.
The Holy Spirit revealed the meaning. The Result: Salvation of 3000.
All were witnesses Acts 1:8
What Peter was enabled to say Acts 2:14, the 120 were enabled to do Acts 2:4
Peter had the same power in speaking as the 120 in other languages.
Understanding of what was said had a great impact.
Priorities thereafter:  teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayer. Acts 2:42
Pentecost repeated? Acts 4:13. No tongues mentioned.
Place shaken – wind or tremor?
Bold in speaking and united Acts 4:32
Experience of the Holy Spirit repeated. Renewal needed. Ongoing.
Acts 8 Samaritans received the Holy Spirit after Peter and John placed their hands on them.
Something new. No schism or division resulted.
Paul was converted on the Damascus road and later filled with the Holy Spirit Acts 9
He received back his sight and was baptised.
Cornelius,a Gentile, received the Holy Spirit at conversion Acts 10:45
He spoke in tongues to teach the Jews that the gift of the Holy Spirit was also for the Gentiles who trusted Jesus.
We cannot limit God by insisting on a method but leave it to Him to bring renewal and joy Acts 13:52
Disciples at Ephesus, were baptised in water, but had no knowledge of the Holy Spirit Acts 19:2
'Paul laid his hands on them. The Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke in tongues. They prophesied' Acts 19:6
After Pentecost, Baptism of the Spirit only used then.
1 Corinthians 12:13 describes what happened.

Filled with the Spirit Ephesians 5:18
Renewal of the Spirit Titus 3:5

Acts 11:16, 1 Corinthians 12:13 All believers receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit at conversion.
Acts 19 Fullness of the Spirit after conversion. Same applies today.
Could be at conversion. Could be later.
All believers in Jesus have the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:9
Not all are fully under His control.
His control results in freedom from the fear of man and liberty in preaching with power, peace and joy, full assurance of salvation 2 Corinthians 1:22, of understanding Colossians 2:2, of answered prayer 1 John 5:14-15
We need boldness today, liberty to share Jesus and power say what He would have us say.
